Review - CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. It's the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17-year-old young man, spends his days in his family's 17th-century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights. While Elio's sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old American college graduate student working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio's father. Brilliant, Chris Noland delivers again.
Unfortunately when I say possibly this year's 'Moonlight' last year's Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards) I don't necessarily mean it as a good thing. When I reviewed that film I described it as a "film about nothing. While I wouldn't go as far as to say the same about 'Call Me by Your Name' there are similarities in that sense. What is actually separating this from other love stories out there? Is it the homosexual element? Is it two straight actors playing homosexuals convincingly well (ala 'Brokeback Mountain. another highly over-rated film in my opinion) Are the movie-going public simply fascinated by this concept? I'm not sure, and while I'm certainly not calling 'Call Me by Your Name' a bad film, I don't think it was Best Picture nomination worthy.
I kept expecting more from the film. Around the 65 minute mark I actually had to get my phone out and check what the movie was supposed to be about, because nothing had happened as yet. The synopsis was vague to say the least and I hoped it was just holding back information for fear of spoilers. It wasn't. The film really is as simple and straight-forward as the plot line suggests. So what are we, the audience, supposed to grasp onto here? Well, put simply, we have to buy into the love story 100. And to be honest I'm not sure I did. I've seen a lot of great love stories told in films over the years, and this one wouldn't rank in the top 100 I'm pretty sure.
If you break the film up into three parts, before the couple get together, during the time they've got together and then after they've gotten together, then I think the structuring needed to be different. Too long is spent on the first phase, not quite enough on the second phase and then far from enough on the final phase. The final phase was the chance to really drive things home and draw some emotion out of the audience. Even during the short time we get in that final 1/3 we get two tremendous scenes. One with a speech from the father and then the very final scene of the film. More of that and you would've had yourself a truly great film.
The actors do do a tremendous job and fully immerse themselves in their respective roles. The potential was certainly there for this to be something great, but it was just lacking in creativity on the writer's part. The story plays out far too straight-forward. A missed opportunity.
FINALLY James ivory wins a Oscar. Call me by your name had a strong and insurmountable script.
The way he sways while nodding yes😊. The most beautiful love story ever. A. In this scene. how many years elio and oliver being apart for each other. Imagine being asked the same question over and over.
100% by far one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen, the emotions I felt will remain with me for the rest of my life. Heartbreaking... Ok Chris, that obstacle point you had is. kinda bullshit. You said you would like there to be more obstacles for increased drama and realism but. I just don't see the point in that. If there are no obstacles and they can just be romantically involved with each other, then surely that's realism. In they're situation of course.I just don't see the point in changing that, that's all.
The picture of Timothee Chalamet is in his shirt. How lovely.💖. You can hear me crying somewhere in the background... I love how accepting the parents were though. They were like ah yes, son with his gayness, well done.
This was gold. I loved this movie so much ohhh goshhhhh. Im I love. I don't know if this is just my interpretation of the scene, but when Oliver tells Elio, Don't go anywhere. Stay right here. It's as though Oliver is speaking those words to the part of Elio who is bold, unafraid of telling him how he feels. Oliver already knows Elio isn't going anywhere. Oliver touches his chest twice with his finger and begins to walk away, and as Elio responds You know I'm not going anywhere, he is looking towards the bus, a reminder that Oliver is the one who has to ultimately leave. I wonder if that place really did mix up all of Oliver's pages or if he just lied so he could spend the day with Elio.
If u rmb the ending of the movie oliver said that he will rmb everything n elio sob uncontrollably after that. Is also partial actual feelings that armie n timonthee had. The fact that the fliming is over n they have to separate n end this beautiful 'relationship' or chemistry they had with each other n leaving this amazing short-lived life tgt, its heartbreaking. The fact that armie has kept on mentioning how he will nvr forget all the things he went through in the flim is just a prove of that.
Armie seemed so disappointed when it wasn't fan art of him and Timmy 👀.
Wow what a movie. Turn up the volume and take in this experience. Elio flirting is somehow so cute. The way he says you know what things and his whole body language is just a special thing. Best sound editing -Oscars 2018. I CAME BACK BECAUSE I COULDN'T HELP IT, HELP, IT STILL HURTS.

This movie was so beautiful. Best movie I've seen in a long time. Those slow moments were some of the best moments. I love how Everything is perfect and unique, with one small mistake, but otherwise. Great, awesome, romantic film! A. Timothée is the most nonchalant, unproblematic, talented and gorgeous kid Ive ever seen.

I have never been able to see another Movie five times like I did this. Armie's big summer romance. 10:10 that whole confession. I don't feel like he's talking to the audience, I feel that it was a confession to Timmy, and the looks of both of them after that...
